Stories from the Heart: Tales of Inspiration

Stories From The Heart: Tales of Inspiration is a collection of 16 short stories. Each of these stories has been told live on stage at a Stories From The Heart live storytelling event and adapted for the reader.

There will be only 60 copies of the exclusive muti-author signed book, available to pre-order.

To ensure you don’t miss out on your copy, order before the night.

The Perth #storytribe has grown to be such a warm and welcoming place to celebrate the art of oral storytelling.

I wanted the stories told on stage, to continue to live on, to leave a legacy, and to be enjoyed over and over by people all around the world.

Each of these stories is real, raw, and relatable. When we speak on stage, what we say and the style in what we say it is quite different to a piece that is for the reader.

On stage, we have the added nuances of body language, gestures, energy, and tone of voice. To ensure that the stories make for great reading, they have been lightly edited. However, each story is true to the form and honours the teller.

There is something for everyone in this book.

Designed to be enjoyed over a coffee (or you can binge-read if that is your style!), these bite-sized stories, will take you on a journey into the lives of 16 local writers and storytellers.

Collectively, we are offering our stories to you to read and enjoy, to reflect and to think about the power of the human spirit, about the ups downs and twists and turns that make up the rich tapestry of life.

All profits from book sales at the Story Reading will go to HeartKids, an Australian charity that helps families of children born with congenital heart disease.

I hope that you enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed working with this group of wonderful writers to bring it to you.

What others say:

Funny and sad – you will smile, you will be teary, and you will relate to the feelings expressed, the incidents which happened, and the lessons learned. You may not have “been there, done that,” but someone close to you has.
Each story is different, told by different people at different stages of their lives, though they all have things in common. They share experiences and open up without fearing scrutiny, and every story ends with hope and a positive attitude.
By Claudette Pope, writer, Perth.

There will be light refreshments tea, coffee, juices, slices and cake available for you to purchase.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela – The Astor Theatre

One of the most critically acclaimed acoustic instrumental bands in the world, Rodrigo y Gabriela have sold in excess of 1.5 million albums globally, and have packed out iconic venues around the world, from the Hollywood Bowl and Royal Albert Hall to the Sydney Opera House, Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Paris’ Le Zenith.

2014’s 9 Dead Alive was praised by music critics and fans the world over. Unmistakably Spanish in sound, the duo also showcases influences as diverse as metal to rock to world music. “… they fuse it together to create energetic, lively and often unpredictable acoustic guitar music”, said The Line Of Best Fit. While NPR wrote, “Rodrigo y Gabriela return to their roots, reminding listeners why they fell in love with the Mexican duo in the first place. The album finds them at the peak of their musical flexibility.”

In January of this year, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their self-titled breakthrough release, Rodrigo y Gabriela reissued a newly remastered version of the album, together with a never-before-released 2006 live record. Originally released in Ireland, the album is affectionately known to fans as the Crocodile Album, and topped the charts ahead of Johnny Cash and the Arctic Monkeys on release in 2006.

Known for their dynamic live performances, and with roots busking in Dublin before extensive touring and a great word of mouth buzz carried them forward, Rodrigo y Gabriela are without doubt one of the most captivating live acts in the world.

360 “The Vintage Modern Tour” – The Astor Theatre

After announcing the release of his fourth studio album, Vintage Modern (October 27th) alongside the hypnotic first taste YESTERDAY, the enigmatic 360 unveils dates for the Vintage Modern National Tour, a massive all-ages outing across Australia his first in over three years. Taking in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne, these shows will be the first chance for the wider public to catch 360 after a string of sold out intimate shows earlier in 2017. Tickets go on-sale to 360’s private fan club The Close Circle on Tuesday 17th and general public on Thursday October 19th.

In addition, 360 has released COUP DE GRACE, a brand new track from Vintage Modern featuring longtime friends and collaborators PEZ & Seth Sentry.  “This is us in beast mode” 360 says of the undeniable classic raps from the three revered local artists over exceptionally menacing Styalz Fuego production.

‘Vintage Modern’ finds 360 in peak form, an artist re-invigorated. Writing the bulk of the album as acoustic pieces first, then teaming up with a tight-knit production crew – longtime collaborator Styalz Fuego, executive producer Nic Martin and chief instrumentalist Carl Dimataga – the album pairs 60’s trademark charm, honesty and razor sharp raps with a lush sonic backbone of guitars and live instrumentation fused with contemporary rap sounds, replacing the heavy synths and electronic drops his music is traditionally known for.

Whilst creating Vintage Modern, 360 launched VI –  a wildly successful direct-to-fan campaign, gradually dropping six brand new streaming tracks with accompanying videos directly to his 10,000 member strong Facebook fan group ˜The Close Circle” and returned to the stage for the first time in three years with sold out shows in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Across all platforms, the campaign reached over 8,000,000 million people on social media, with an astonishing 25,000 social shares, and in turn reinforced his stature as a key figure in Australian hip hop.

The Minimalists – Less Is Now – The Astor Theatre

What if everything you ever wanted isn’t what you actually want?

When they were twenty-something, suit-clad, and upwardly mobile, best friends Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus thought they had everything anyone could ever want. Until they didn’t want any of it anymore.

When Joshua was blindsided by the loss of his mother and his marriage, and Ryan was faced with crippling debt and depression, they began questioning every aspect of the lives they had built for themselves. Then they discovered a lifestyle known as minimalism—and everything began to change.

In the pursuit of looking for something more substantial than compulsory consumption and the broken American Dream, Joshua & Ryan both walked away from six-figure careers and embarked on a new journey. Since embracing simplicity as a lifestyle, they have written three books, including the bestselling memoir, Everything That Remains; launched a #1 podcast; cofounded Asymmetrical Press, a publishing house for the indie at heart; embarked on a 100-city international speaking tour; and spoken at Harvard Business School, Apple, SXSW, TEDx, WDS, NAPO, and many other organizations, schools, and conferences. Their new film, Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things, was the #1 indie doc of 2016.

Joshua & Ryan have garnered an audience of more than 4 million readers at their website, TheMinimalists.com, where they write about living a meaningful life with less stuff. Their story has been featured on the Today show and in Time magazine, People, Forbes, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Seattle Times, Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, Vancouver Sun, Village Voice, L.A. Weekly, and numerous other outlets.

Both born in 1981 and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Joshua & Ryan now live in Missoula, Montana.

DWEEZIL ZAPPA – CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF FRANK IN ONE NIGHT – The Astor Theatre

DWEEZIL ZAPPA – CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF FRANK IN ONE NIGHT

David Roy Williams in collaboration with Principal Entertainment present Dweezil Zappa, son of the legendary Frank Zappa, celebrating 50 years of Zappa with a series of concerts and exclusive guitar masterclasses in Australia & New Zealand in early 2018.

Sheik Yerbouti next February, 2018 as the legendary music of Frank Zappa is celebrated live on stage by the man’s prodigiously talented son Dweezil Zappa and his band The Others of Intention.

Freak Out to some of the most inventive and wildly original music ever committed to tape! Discover Who Are The Brain Police as Dweezil conducts immaculate explorations and excavations of Frank’s 50 year old debut album.  Take a drive with the Muffin Man along the Inca Roads in the Orange County Lumber Truck as Dweezil digs in for a suite mined from one of Frank Zappa’s most acclaimed albums, Joe’s Garage.

Dweezil will be whippin’ up a G-Spot Tornado, as he explores everything from the deepest album cuts through to the cult favourites that have made Frank Zappa and his music such an indelible influence on our musical culture.

Before you ask Is That All There Is? Dweezil will be holding exclusive and strictly limited guitar master classes and Q&A session before each show, exploring exciting new approaches to guitar that he has employed to play his dad’s most sophisticated and challenging melodies.  So you can Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar, and take a step closer to mastering The Black Page, these masterclasses provide theories that destroy the boundaries that confine music creativity.

So don’t be a Zomby Woof, move like the Teen-Age Wind and grab a ticket before they are all gone, as The Son Of Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar shows you how it’s done.

DATE AND TIME

Tue. 1 May 2018

6:30 pm – 11:00 pm AWST

LOCATION

The Astor Theatre

659 Beaufort Street

Mount Lawley, WA 6050

South London new-wave legends Squeeze are headed for Australia in 2018 for a run of not-to-be-missed shows. With hits like ‘Cool For Cats’, ‘Tempted’ and ‘Up The Junction’, Squeeze will bring the soundtrack of the 70s and 80s into full focus with special guest punk poet Dr John Cooper Clarke.

Squeeze first formed in 1973, brought together by an ad in a sweetshop window. By 1977 they had made their recording debut and enjoyed a string of hits which lasted until 1982, the maturity of their songs outliving their initial burst of chart activity on the back of New Wave.

Over the years there have been solo careers and occasional separations, but the Ivor Novello Award-winning act have been a consistent fixture of the UK and US music scenes over four decades, with recent activity including the critically acclaimed album soundtrack to the BBC sitcom ‘Cradle to Grave’ in 2015 and a triumphant return to Glastonbury in 2016.

Their first trip downunder since re-forming a decade ago, Squeeze have never been more vibrant, relevant and on point as they couple their pop sensibilities with poignant lyrics and a live show that’s not to be missed.

ROSEMOUNT RUMBLE

in the Backyard w/ live music, DJs and all things rockabilly

DATE: Saturday, 24th February

DOORS OPEN: 2:00pm-7:00pm

STAGE: Rosemount Backyard

TICKETS: Free Entry

Rosemount Hotel is proud to present Rosemount Rumble, a rockin’ new Saturday afternoon session. Rosemount Rumble is conceived as a weekly hangout for likeminded rockers, young and old, who have a love for great tunes, classic street machines and fantastic hospitality. Don’t miss a live performance by rockabilly legends Johnny Law. Rosemount Rumble has established itself as the place to be on a Saturday afternoon. Perth’s rock n’ roll identity and the godfather of Rosemount Rumble – Shakir Pichler – is currently spreading his light to greener pastures. The angel in residence caring for Rosemount Rumble during his hiatus is none other than Holly Doll. Shakir’s influence – like that of all respected gods – will continue in the heart of every lover of rockabilly, remaining evanescent for all time. Happy hour drinks kick off between 2 and 3pm with the two pounds of the Rosemount’s signature Buffalo Wings set to fly all afternoon at $15. This is a kid and pet-friendly session with all cool like minded people welcome. Reserved parking is available for all pre-60’s vehicles. So bring your partner, pooch and mini-me rockers along for the ride and be a part of Rosemount Rumble!
