Avon Decent 2017

It’s on again – 5th & 6th August 2017.

The Avon Descent is one of Western Australia’s oldest and greatest sporting events and attracts competitors and spectators from throughout Australia and the world.

Avon Descenters challenge the Avon and Swan rivers in a variety of paddle and power craft in an exciting two-day time trial over 124 gruelling kilometres.

The Avon Descent was first held in 1973 with just 49 competitors, no rules, no officials, no checkpoints and very few spectators. In the years since, over 35,000 people have competed in the Avon Descent, from novices and families, to World Champions and Olympic competitors

Imagine passing 124 km through the farming regions of historic Northam and Toodyay, forested national parks, steep gorges, the Swan Valley vineyard region and eventually into the tidal waters of the upper Swan River.

This is a unique race with a promise that no two paddle strokes will be the same.

Nothing beats an exciting finish! Join support crews and spectators to welcome competitors over the Finish Line at the City of Bayswater Avon Descent Finish Line (Riverside Gardens) Family Fun Day between 11.00am & 5.00pm.

Enjoy a sensational FREE day out for the whole family! Bouncy castles, children’s rides, face painting and live commentary will be on the loud speakers as competitors come over the Finish Line.

National Tree Day 2017

2017 is the year to get involved in National Tree Day!

Take part in the country’s largest community tree planting and nature care FREE event.

Join us at Les Lilleyman Reserve, North Perth  (near the clubrooms) on 30 July, 8am to 12.00pm, to help plant up the eastern bank with over 5,000 native tube stock species and transform an unused area of this reserve! Come down with the kids and the dog to meet some locals, grab a sausage sizzle and help us green Vincent!

Planet Ark’s National Tree Day provides all Australians with an opportunity to do something positive for the environment and reconnect with nature – we’re proud to once again be a part of this national day of tree planting.

What will we be planting?     A large range of West Australian and Australian native ground covers and low growing species. West Australian and Australian native species are generally quite hardy, require small amounts of water and fertiliser, build additional habitat for our local fauna species and create a beautiful native landscape.

What do I need to bring?       Vincent will be providing a range of things such as shovels, hand trowels and gloves, but due to the popularity of this event if you have these items at home please bring them along.

What will be provided?          A sausage sizzle will be provided following planting activities.

Water and toilet facilities will available on site.

Ample free parking is available in the Gill Street car park (opposite Les Lilleyman Reserve) as well as limited on road parking.

How do I register?                 Please contact the City’s Project Officer – Parks & Environment, Sarah Hill at sarah.hill@vincent.wa.gov.au or on 9273 6589, or visit the National Tree Day website to register.

North Perth Community Garden

Basic CMYK

Located at 10 Farmer Street, North Perth

North Perth Community Garden (NPCG) is a community hub where people can gather, socialise, garden and learn about sustainability initiatives.

The 820m2 space is more than a place for individuals to garden. It is an integral part of the local community and many of the members or their partners are also members of the immediate neighbours Vincent Men’s Shed, North Perth Tennis Club or North Perth Bowling Club.

The precinct is a hive of activity for many. The  garden is predominantly for growing herbs, vegetables and some flowers. If you are interested in larger plants there is a  small orchard and a native garden area which is cared for by all members. The garden is not intended as certified organic but the aim is to operate on organic principles nurturing our soil, using low toxicity, naturally derived products and limiting any type of chemical use.

The garden also consists of 41 individually leased plots for members to grow their own produce and three large plots managed by a group of communal gardeners who share the fruits of their labours.

NPCG is an incorporated body and is operated by a community steering committee and supported by the City of Vincent.

At NPCG Vincent residents have three options of membership; annually leasing an individual plot, an annual contribution toward the community plots and access to the produce from the community plot, or a friend of NPCG membership.

For more information on the garden, upcoming events or workshops and memberships please contact northperthcommunitygarden@gmail.com or visit their website or Facebook page.
