Joondanna

A little gem a stone’s throw from Perth

Located just 6 kilometres north of the city in Perth’s urban fringe, Joondanna has a character all of its own without the profile of some of its near neighbours.  Originally named “Joondanna Heights” the subdivision of Joondanna saw rapid development in the late 1940s and early 1950s the housing stock was primarily single detached houses.  By the late 50’s land was once again in short supply.

In recent years, some of the old timber-framed workers’ houses have made way for new developments.  Small groups of unit style developments have sprung up, offering affordable housing options close to the city.  Even so, single detached dwellings are still the dominant form of housing in the suburb.

A few minutes’ drive will get you to Dog Swamp or Flinders Square Shopping Centres, into the city or down to Scarborough Beach.  The nearby Glendalough Train Station makes commuting to the CBD a breeze and the cafe strip on Main Street is popular with the locals.

Joondanna has a number of green open spaces for recreation, the largest park surrounds the highly visible water tower on Roberts Street which has become a well-loved local landmark. The very popular Lake Monger and its surrounding reserve are located nearby to the south.

Additional information

The first of the northern suburbs to emerge after the war, Joondanna is bordered by the Osborne Park Industrial and commercial area to the west. The Mitchell Freeway and Wanneroo Road passes through the area in a north south direction with Mount Hawthorne and Leederville to the south.

Locals love the proximity to the CBD and describe it as a peaceful area with great community spirit. Located on the corner of Wade Street and Stoneham Street, the   Joondanna Community Garden is very popular with locals. A vibrant hub for the local community, you can learn about organic gardening in an interactive and creative environment. For those who like the idea of growing their own food, individual plots can be leased from City of Stirling.

Without the price tags of nearby Mount Hawthorn or Leederville, Joondanna offers an affordable alternative, with Herdsman and Lake Monger nearby there are many recreational options.
